Editor in Chief needed for seasonal visual arts publication

WHO:

ArtSpan, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, builds community by connecting the public to visual arts in San Francisco. Through SF Open Studios, youth and adult education, and art-centric events, ArtSpan creates a platform for artists to thrive by fostering a Bay Area community that values the arts.

WHAT:

ArtSpan produces a 114-page annual, The SF Open Studios Guide, in a perfect-bound, glossy magazine format. Thirty-five thousand of the high profile, collectible annuals are distributed through drop and subscription, based on membership, throughout the Bay Area.

THE JOB:

ArtSpan seeks an Editor in Chief to manage designers, writers, photographers and staff inputs into the publication. The Editor in Chief will deliver three (3) proofs and the print-ready final, and is ultimately responsible for all production tasks and deadlines.

This is a part-time position that can easily fit in with a freelancer's schedule.

DEADLINES:

Production begins in May -- IMMEDIATELY -- with the final proof to go to the printer at the end of July. Printer’s proofs return for review in August. Duration of assignment is May – August 20, 2007.

QUALIFICATIONS:

o Either an editorial or production background
o Experience in print publications
o Strict attention to production deadlines
o Ability to control a budget
o Ability to manage people and allocate responsibilities
o Past supervisory experience
o Ability to proofread and edit -- Chicago Manual of Style preferred
o Ability to correspond clearly over e-mail, phone and in person

Preferred qualifications include:

o Knowledge of art-features writing
o Conversant in design process
o Experience in nonprofit publishing
o Ability to work with project management diagrams: Gantt and Critical Path

ArtSpan has drafted the work plan based on past experience. The Editor in Chief reports to ArtSpan’s Executive Director, former holder of this title.
